What Are Citations?

Understand how AI models reference external sources — and why it matters for your visibility.

Definition

A citation is a reference that an AI model includes in its response, linking to an external website. For example, when you ask ChatGPT or Perplexity a question and a link to a specific domain appears in the answer, that is a citation.

Citations are an important indicator of which sources AI models consider trustworthy and relevant. The more frequently your domain appears as a citation, the stronger your presence in AI-generated responses.

Citation vs. Mention

In ucited.ai, we distinguish between two concepts:

  • Mention — Your brand name is referenced in the body text of an AI response (e.g. “According to provider XY...”). Mentions are tracked on the dashboard under “Share of Voice.”
  • Citation — A domain is linked as a source reference in the AI response or listed as a footnote. Citations appear on the dedicated Citations page.

Why does this distinction matter?

A brand can be mentioned in an AI response without its website being linked — and vice versa. For a complete GEO strategy, you should monitor both metrics.

Why Are Citations Important?

Citations are relevant for your marketing strategy for several reasons:

  1. Trust signal — AI models preferentially link to sources they consider authoritative. A high citation rate indicates strong trust in your content.
  2. Traffic source — Users click on citations to visit the original source. Citations are a growing traffic channel alongside traditional search.
  3. Competitive comparison — By analyzing which domains are frequently cited, you can identify which competitors are particularly prominent in AI responses.
  4. Content quality — If your content is frequently cited, it indicates that your content meets AI model requirements: clearly structured, factually sound, and well-linked.
