Improving Visibility

Concrete actions when your Share of Voice drops or competitors gain ground.

When Should You Act?

Not every fluctuation in Share of Voice requires immediate action. Here are the signals to watch for:

  • Sustained downtrend — Your SOV has been declining continuously over several weeks
  • Competitor rising — A competitor is significantly gaining visibility
  • Mentions fluctuating — Your mentions are inconsistent and unpredictable
  • No citations — Your domain rarely or never appears in source references

Scenario: SOV Drops at a Specific AI Model

If your Share of Voice drops at a specific AI model (e.g. ChatGPT) while remaining stable at others:

  1. Check SOV by model — Open the SOV by AI Model view and identify which model is causing the decline.
  2. Analyze prompt performance — Check which prompts show the steepest decline. Are they general or specific questions?
  3. Check competitors — See if a specific competitor has gained ground on exactly these prompts.
  4. Optimize content — Update and improve the content on your website related to the affected prompts.
  5. Build citations — Ensure your domain is mentioned on relevant third-party sites that the AI model uses as sources.

Scenario: Competitor Gaining Visibility

When a competitor is catching up or overtaking you in the SOV data:

  1. Competitor analysis — Check in the SOV timeseries when the increase began. This helps narrow down the cause.
  2. Prompt comparison — Identify in the prompt performance which topics the competitor has become stronger at.
  3. Citation Check — Check on the Citations page whether the competitor is mentioned on frequently cited domains where you are not.
  4. Close content gaps — Create or improve content on topics where the competitor dominates.
  5. Third-party presence — Build your presence on the domains that serve as sources for the competitor.

Scenario: Mentions Fluctuating

When your mentions fluctuate significantly (sometimes high, sometimes low):

  • Extend the time range — Switch to a longer observation period (90 days) to see the overall trend.
  • Check prompts — Some prompts may be highly volatile. Check whether the fluctuations come from specific prompts.
  • Improve consistency — Ensure your brand name is used consistently on your website and on third-party sites.
  • Track more prompts — Broader prompt coverage smooths out fluctuations and gives you a more stable picture.

Slight fluctuations are normal — AI models regularly update their responses. Only take action when you see sustained trends or significant swings.

5 Steps to More AI Visibility

Regardless of the specific scenario, you can implement these five foundational measures:

  1. Optimize content for AI — Use clear structures, headings, FAQ sections, and direct answers to common questions.
  2. Build authority — Get mentioned and linked on industry portals, comparison sites, and trade media.
  3. Ensure freshness — Keep your content up to date. AI models prefer sources with current information.
  4. Use structured data — Schema.org markup helps AI models better understand and categorize your content.
  5. Expand monitoring — Track more prompts and competitors to get a more complete picture of your visibility.
